Ban fishing? A Facebook post from 12 years ago today — July 7, 2014. How ironic that the Fish and Wildlife just this past week banned pier fishermen from using wire leaders and large hooks to fish for sharks.

PETA, following the shark attack in Los Angeles, is now calling for a ban on all pier fishing in the area. Says pier fishing endangers the swimmers and surfers. I'm not surprised since it's PETA but the thing that is surprising is how many idiots go along with their views. They blame the angler who hooked the shark for the shark biting the swimmer AND the wife of the swimmer now says they will sue the angler. So let's see — you're fishing for sharks and rays and you mistakenly hook a great white — and now it's your fault that it bites someone. Manhattan Beach is an area known to have a number of great whites, I've documented that fact, and I predicted LAST YEAR that it was only a matter of time until someone was bitten. BUT, the city officials have failed to heed warnings and now they threaten angling at the pier. It reminds me of the lady on the North Central Coast MLPA Committee that wanted territory set aside for great whites. She said they were the apex predator and we needed to respect their needs. Sorry, but a lady was killed a few years ago while swimming near the Avila Pier and quite a few surfers and swimmers have been attacked the last few years as the number of great whites has multiplied. I have no problem trying to increase their numbers but let's not kid ourselves and pretend they're not dangerous. Their other name is "Man Eater Shark" and it's a name they have earned over the years.

PETA is truly the worst. I say this as an animal lover who does feral rescue work and teaches people how to safely care for their farm animals, not as someone indifferent to caring for animals. PETA often seems to me like some sort of long con to discredit animal rights...

…and then you have the idiots who go out and "study" the sharks, feeding them where others tread, or the tourist boats who like to chum them to get tourist action. Derek used to go to Guadalupe Island for great fishing and now you catch a fish there is a good chance that there is a shark on the other end eating your catch. I am sorry but these do gooders only make things worse.

Apparently the Manhattan City Council has just decided there will be no fishing from the pier for the next 60 days.

Someone just suggested on my website, pierfishing.com, that boating anglers in sympathy with pier anglers should surround the pier for the next 60 days chumming and heavily baiting the water. Stopping one form of fishing starts the inevitable slide down the slope for other forms of fishing.

Remember when they were handing out comic books around public fishing areas titled, "Your Daddy Murders Fish"? They've only gotten worse.

OK so this may sound a little extreme... but i think it is time to remove all safety labels, warning signs, and any other form of device or person that protects the stupid people in this world... if we did that... I have a feeling the gene pool of this would be much more intelligent... because those that are smart enough to put 2 and 2 together.. well... they will be just fine .... end of rant...
