Tuesday there were lots of halibut and White Sea bass caught by those of us that fish for them. My friend caught an eight pound halibut on a small smelt. I netted it for him and I swear he was so excited that I worried about him having a heart attack. My daughter stood beside him and kept telling him to breathe, breathe. He was okay once the halibut got onto the pier. The water was not perfect for netting a fish, but I got him on the second try. It actually jumped out of the net on the first try. That is why it is important to always have your drag set loose enough that the fish can run without popping your line. My friend also got at least seven halibut that day, but just the big one to keep. All the White Sea bass were the small ones up to about 20 inches. Yesterday as we were leaving one of the guys fishing on the surf tee caught a nice BONEFISH. I hadn't seen one of those for a number of years. I have gotten four of them in the past always in the surf area. By the way although we got a decent number of bait fish, we could not get halibut. One small one was caught, and all the rest of the fish were small white sea bass. One bonito was caught. Still absolutely no sardines seen for a number of weeks now. The domoic acid took care of their population for a while.
