A new video, this one on the Imperial Beach pier.

Anyone's comments? I know it doesn't show many fish being caught but it was what it was, a dead day at the pier and by the time I got done talking even the sardines had departed. There are also some technical glitches that as we do more films should be eliminated.

By the way, we are trying to arrange a day of filming at the Mole in Avalon on 12/11 and would, of course, welcome any PFIC members that want to join in. A mini-get-together of sorts. You might even wind up on the film.

I will update if there are any changes.

Since you asked.

Initial greeting was missing. "hello, my name is Ken Jones, I have fished every pier in California and would like to take you along to some of them.".. "today we are at (pier name)" "This pier is located in...................and it is known for the following species................."

Or something similar.

What was the purpose of taking the pier cart? When it was not used?

At the end.........

Yes, perhaps I need to mention who I am and why they should listen to me at the start of each film.

I intended to fish, thus the pier cart. But, as said, by the time I got ready to fish they had largely departed. Did drop a Sabiki in and catch a few smelt but no reason to show that.

Perhaps a picture of the book before starting the video, and a way to get it in the description below the video.

"Hello, My name is Ken Jones. Since 1962, I have kept a record of all the fish that I have caught from the various piers in California.
I have written two books about pier fishing in California piers. Come (join me) with me while I visit various piers."

You can record once and put it in the introduction of each video.

One more suggestion. Any item shown on video is advertisement for the product.

Rather than the tee shirt with Kelp logo on it, maybe a Pierfishing tee shirt would be better.

Eventually, you may get offers to recommend their products.

Great video in general. A couple general points. I think the audience for these videos is a newer angler and because of that you have to be aware of when you are using terminology or jargon that most who post regularly on this site would understand but a newer angler will not.

For example when you talk about the pier at about 25 seconds in you use the word snag lines and inshore without defining either term. You also use the phrase "you know" in this section which makes me think in your mind you think you may be speaking to someone who may know what these terms mean.

I am very impressed with the skill and knowledge of the regular posters here. It is an exceptional community in that regard. But you have to remember that the majority of people who visit this site are silently lurking. They do not post. They may not even have registered for a username. This is your main audience for these videos.

Secondly I like the use of the cutaways when you are speaking but the cuts are too short. It seems like the editor wants to get back to the shot of you talking when really that shot doesn't change that much and there is nothing in that shot to illustrate visually the things you are talking about. Each of the cutaways could be longer to make the video flow better and you could use more cutaways. When you refer to historical events like the opening of the pier, you could cut away to an old newspaper (if you could find that image asset). When you refer to the location of the pier close to Mexico, you could cut away to a map. When you refer fishing the pilings you could cut away to a shot of a cast that lands between the pilings. When you refer to an underhand cast, you could cut away to a shot of you doing an underhand cast.

In general, whenever you are out fishing or even when other PFIC members are out fishing, you should encourage people to take footage and develop a library of things that you can cutaway to whenever you are trying to describe something. It would be great if other PFIC members who were fishing a lot could capture what they are doing and make it available for these videos. That would ease the burden on you personally and give your editor more options.

These videos are a great start and I'm happy you are doing them! Keep it up!

Evan, Thanks for the good advice. I think we were flying by our pants a little on this video and it shows. Didn't do a good job of the 7 P's but one result is the good advice we're getting. Thanks!

Do you use a remote microphone? The volume seems to drop when you turn your head away from the camera.

Is there a “windshield” a fuzzy foam on the camera microphone? To keep the wind noise down.

Under water shot of the pier would be interesting, but it requires special camera and setup.

As for the mechanics, that has been left in Rich's hand and it's brand new to him as it is to me. Nothing fancy, a simple camera and sound equipment, and I imagine the more of these we do the better will be the end product.
