Balboa pier 7/13 and Santa Monica pier 6/14

Fished balboa pier from 10am-12pm on Wednesday, at the peak of high tide. Only caught 3 sardines, but the pier was mostly empty and the other guy fishing next to me caught 3 mackerel as well. Overall slow, but I was jigging a sabiki without bait. Fished Santa Monica pier from 9am-1pm on Thursday...

Selling some reels and gear before I go off to college

Feel free to ask if I’ve got a certain reel you might want, I’ve got a fair amount and I might just have what you need. I’m also looking to trade up for some spinning and casting rods too. Another ambassadeur or some kind of more modern conventional is also on my wishlist if you want to trade...

Selling some reels and gear before I go off to college

Hi again guys, it’s been a long while since I was here, but between college and the pandemic, it’s just been rough on me and I haven’t really had any time to fish and most of my stuff has just been collecting dust. I’d like to trim down my collection a bit, and I think that selling here to...

    Salted sardines

Should work, I’ve used salted anchovies and herring for halibut with reasonable success. The belly doesn’t seem to blow out as much as on frozen, but it will seem a bit shrunken and brown compared to fresh. Doubt it makes too much difference though. Brining will keep the sheen a bit better but...

Need a refresher for the sf bay

Alrighty, thanks, probably won’t be going at ideal tides, but I can only hope for something like a lost halibut or striper.

Need a refresher for the sf bay

Finally finished grinding through finals with 6 classes, and I’m planning to go out on oyster point this week. Anyone know what’s been biting and what’s around? Definitely need a break from all the online classes.

Remedial question - Recommended bait for crabbing (vs. feeding the sea lions...)

From what I’ve seen at the muni pier, the seals don’t really bother bait that are in cages. I’ve had seals try to drag my nets under before I built some bait cages. I used some hardware cloth about the size that they use for crab snares and I made about a 4”x4”x2” box to keep my bait. Just make...

Will any piers be closed or inaccessible with the latest stay-at-home order?

Doubt that the muni pier will close because so many people still use it, but I know that the surrounding museums are. If it is closed, fort point and pier 7 will most likely be open.

    Robert e Woolley pier

Heard from a few guys a couple weeks ago on oyster point that it was. Most likely it is, Pacifica is open too.

    Oyster point 6/13

Came to the pier at around 1pm at peak low tide, fished until 8pm. Dragged a few friends with me and that totaled to quite a few people on the pier, mostly using dead bait on the bottom. Plenty of smelt for the guy who was fishing for them. Caught a decent bat ray around 2-3pm, probably a good...

    Balboa Pier 6/11

The seal get you too? Feels man. But that’s still a haul of fish you got. Nice.

    Oyster point 6/7

Dang. Though I’d still take the NOAA recommendations with a grain of salt, they also say fishermen can use rubber bullets. And they also say we can scare them off with water guns somehow. Doubt it’ll work. Guess I’ll have to clarify with a game warden the next time they swing by.

    Oyster point 6/7

Went to the pier at 7am at peak low tide. Started with a three way rig with frozen anchovies and herring. Very windy that day, saw one shaker halibut at around 10. More people showed up around 12, and one guy caught some live smelt for bait and I started using some of that. Around this time, a...

    Oyster point 6/6

Headed to the pier at around 6 am on peak low tide. Started with two 3 way rigs with frozen anchovies, herring, and back of the freezer bait. Guy there with a cast net couldn’t get any live bait. Somehow caught a bullhead on my stinger treble and used it as live bait on one of my rods. Some weed...
