Piers at Seal Beach, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach temporarily closed from wave danger ...

I think we may have a problem with Edwinber (post #2). He has only made two posts since he joined on 11/11 (Veteran's Day). I don't know about the first post, but this one looks like an ad. Steve

*Warning, Oceanside pier restaurant trying to block off pier usage*

This may be better placed in a separate thread, but what is happening at Huntington Beach? Steve

    Ocean Beach Pier closed...

When do they expect to make the upcoming changes to the pier? If they have the finances available, maybe they should just get started on that. Steve

    Redtail and Silver Surf 10/15

I've never caught a redtail surfperch, even though I spent 4 to 5 years in Arcata/Eureka, and fished Humboldt Bay often. I was surprised by your description of short redtails. I wasn't aware that any perch had size limits. Checking the regulations, I found that redtail surfperch have a minimum...

Short visit to the Elephant Rock Pier

Ken wrote "I showed them how to remove the stinger without cutting off the tail (which they planned to do) and how to properly hold the ray by the mouth (which you should always do)." Don't bat rays have plate-like teeth for crushing the shells of their prey? Couldn't they easily crush fingers...

Imperial Beach Pier Improvements -- Your Thoughts

It seems like a lot of their visions for the pier will be limiting the fishing in favor of tourism. As you wrote in your Imperial Beach Pier article, "Perhaps the city forgets the role anglers played in helping the pier get built and the role of the California Wildlife Conservation Board? "

    California sneaky lead ban

Lead has advantages: it has a higher density than most commonly available materials, which makes it sink quickly, and its low melting point makes it available for casting your own sinkers. It is however, toxic. This is a potential problem from fumes when casting sinkers. We also leave a lot of...

    Surfers versus fisherman...

A comment from one of the surfers was: “These guys are always throwing their lines out, just inside the lineup, it’s ridiculous.” Does anyone know why the "lineup" is so close to the pier? Is there something around the pier that forms nice waves? Steve

    What is in the name?????

Hi Mahigeer, Nice sheephead (it was really tempting to add an s here). I have read very different opinions about the taste of sheephead. Some write they taste like lobster, others that they are unpalatable. Since you catch both lobster and sheephead, what is your opinion of them as eating fish...

    Humboldt Bay question

123Dwight, I haven't fished there in decades, but if you are thinking about boating in the shallows of the upper bay, be careful. Water conditions can change from calm to rough very carefully. Most of my shark/ray fishing was along the Eureka channel. Mud (brown smoothhound) and leopard sharks...

    I guess I was wrong...

I don't think the point is eliminating stripers, that is essentially impossible. Protecting them while all of our salmon populations and may other native species are endangered (for a variety of reasons) is irresponsible. While the native species populations were strong, they could handle the...

When the Ocean Beach Pier first opened...

This view may be simplistic, but when I look at the pictures, it seems that a slight angle would have gotten the pier a lot closer to the kelp with little, if any, extra cost and effort. Steve
