    The weather...

I'm hoping for good things in SF Bay this summer. Maybe the runoff will help the ecosystem?

    Proposing striper reg changes?

BTW, I'm totally OK with not keeping stripers over 30 inches. That's a lot of fish.

    Proposing striper reg changes?

According to this page, the Nor-Cal Guides and Sportsmen’s Association submitted the regulation change proposal to the California Fish and Game Commission. https://wildlife.ca.gov/News/cdfw-seeking-public-input-on-proposed-slot-limit-for-striped-bass

    SF Bay halibut bite

I avoid dirty water too. When I fish the beach with waders, I like to fish it knee-deep which is about a foot and a half. I wear a pair of oversized canvas shoes with bright chartreuse shoelaces, and my rule of thumb is I need to see the laces, otherwise I'll move on. At Crissy Field, the...

    SF Bay halibut bite

My guess is that the halibut are where the food is, and right now the food is probably deeper. I don't know what causes the baitfish to move closer to shore, but I'm sure temperature, wind, and plankton have a role to play. Last year was somewhat similar to this year, at least temperature-wise...

    SF Bay halibut bite

No luck from shore at Crissy Field yet. I've been going just about once a week and I've had a couple of tap-taps but that's about it. I think the water needs to get above 60F before the shore fishing takes off. If you're interested, here are some notes from my fishing log: Feb 6, 2022 - Spent...

    How many people...

I use the search feature from time to time. Yes I'd be interested in searching the archive too. Lots of useful information in there.

Fish ID: Sanddab or Juvenile Halibut?

It's hard to tell from the photo. California halibut have a lateral line that arches over the pectoral fin whereas dabs have a straighter lateral line. All the juvenile halibut I've caught also have fairly also well defined white spots near the fins, at least the ones I've seen from SF Bay...

Short Trip to the Bay Area #4 — South Harbor Marina Pier

You are correct of course. Close parking spots can be $50 or more on gameday. I live out in the Avenues and could take the N-Judah streetcar but I would want to pack light. A collapsible rod and a small tackle bag I suppose.

Short Trip to the Bay Area #4 — South Harbor Marina Pier

I want to try this pier one of these days during a game. :)

Recommendations for fillet knives and boards for halibut

Thanks for your suggestions! I had never considered a shorter rib knife. Makes total sense that it gives you more control. And thanks for the tip about salt. --Thomas

    SF Bite Warming Up

Lawson Landings fishing report this past week noted that baitfish are finally moving into Tomales Bay. I wonder if the same is also happening now in SF Bay? I did see terns working the shoreline at Crissy last week.

Recommendations for fillet knives and boards for halibut

What do you guys recommend for fillet knives, especially for halibut? I have a Rapala fillet knife with 7.5 inch blade, but it does seem long enough to do the job. I keep it sharp but it still seems to take too much effort. Do you recommend a knife with a longer blade? Also, do any of you use a...

    Crissy halibut

Got my first keeper of the year at Crissy this morning. 27 inches on a 4.5 Storm searchbait houdini with an added stinger hook, my go-to lure for Crissy. I've been going out there about once a week since early April. I caught a small 15-inch throwbacker on my first trip in April but nothing...

    SF Bay Halibut from shore

Got my first of the year casting from shore in SF Bay. At 15.5 inches, nothing to write home about. It was returned safely and gently back into the bay. But it was a happy event nonetheless. Fished from 6:30a to 8:30a for one bite and one fish. Looking forward to something bigger.

Weird bat ray — Mutilated when young? Genetic abnormality? Conjoined twins?

I bet it has extra vertebrae. Would be interesting to see an X-ray.

    Water temperature and fish...

Is the amount of upwelling tracked and plotted on a yearly basis? I'm curious to see which years were high upwelling years and which ones were low. I imagine there might be an online resource for this.

Top Fish Species — SoCal, CenCal, SF Bay, NorCal

Great info! I know this has probably been discussed before, but why the decline in starry flounder, esp. on the central coast? I thought the decline was limited to SF Bay.
