Striped Bass Yesterday on Balboa Pier

One guy got two striped bass yesterday and one 30 inch halibut. It was his lucky day. He didn't bring a net so he had to get the halibut to shore to land it. Snookie

    Keeper finally

On Thursday I got a 30 inch halibut in the surf area on a sardine. What a nice fish. May friend got a 20 1/2 inch halibut and an 18 inch halibut on sardines. It was a much better day at last. Tuesday I got a 16 inch spotted sand bass and another friend got one as well the next day. Snookie

    Anyone fishing?

Yes the weather has limited my fishing and also my fishing partners. We are all planning on going Tuesday this next week if we don't get that rain they mentioned. Hope the water is not the brown like it was on Thursday. They say there was some bait, but the fish didn't want it. We'll try...

Any local reports on damage to piers from the high tides?

Balboa Pier has had some areas that need to be taken care of but nobody seems to pay attention. They are all out by Ruby's on both sides of the pier. We are missing a piling on the west side out near Ruby's. That has been more than a year now. Snookie

    Balboa Pier Tues 8-15-23: BARREN

I was there that day, and there were boils at the end of the pier. Could have been bonitos. My friend tried his lure and a couple good sized fish followed it. We had lots of good bait and lots of strikes in the surf area, but all our halibut were small. Snookie

The upcoming tropical storm — Chubasco

There is a great old video of the storm on Sunday afternoon as the boats were returning from Catalina Island in the storm. It is available on U Tube as the Hurricane of 1939. It is short but good. As to the Newport Pier damage, people were lined up at the city hall the next day. It was in...

Salema — Update & The Fish That Makes Dreams

I and my friends have never caught anything using a Salema. They are a beautiful fish but of no use to us. on Balboa Pier. We do have lots of them right now. Have to weed through them to get the herring and smelt for bait. Too bad. Snookie

    Humbolt Squid Today

Targeting squid requires first an overcast day and second a squid jig. They are easy to catch if they are around. Snookie

    Humbolt Squid Today

There was a "big" Humbolt Squid caught on Balboa Pier this morning. According to Dave, the Ruby's manager it was big. With the overcast we should be seeing some more. (I hope) Snookie

    Anyone fishing?

This week has improved considerably on Balboa Pier. We had good bait or all kinds and also lots of strikes. Caught several undersized halibut and lost one keeper. Everything is looking up now. Snookie

    Isn't anyone fishing?

Yes, I have been fishing. It has been COLD and the fish don't like it either. Have gotten some bait. With it that cold the bait and the fish like the surf area because when the sun comes out it warms the shallow surf water sooner than the rest of the water. That doesn't mean the fish are...

    Caught my Turkey

Knew there had to be a bigger one in the surf area. Congratulations! Snookie

    Using Sand Crabs as Bait

Don't forget there is still a limit on sand crabs. It is 50 sand crabs which as far as I am concerned it is not enough if the fishing is good. Snookie

More Bonito and Number 10 Halibut

Yes, the bonito are still cooperating, but because of the sardines being there I got my tenth halibut for this year. It was 23 inches and in the very surf area. It was another fun day. Snookie

Bonitos still there on Balboa Pier plus I now have Number 8 halibut for this year.

There were lots of bonitos today as long as we could get sardines. We didn't keep the bonitos today, but I did keep the 23 inch halibut I caught on a sardine. That is my eighth one since the last day in January this year. I lost one Thursday. They are fun. Even the little ones are fighters...

    Balboa Pier Bonito action galore!

Glad to hear that the bonitos have decided to stay a while longer. The water temperature took a fall to 63 degrees (so the paper says) and that isn't good, but they must not have noticed it. As far as catching the sardines I have found that the size 6 in the Sabiki is the best size for...

    Bonitos Everywhere on Balboa Pier

Yesterday wasn't quieter down in the surf area. We had lots of sardines and that is what the bonitos wanted. Kept two bonitos and threw the rest back. Also had a keeper halibut but lost her while netting her. A friend caught a big leopard shark in the very surf area. Although he lost it he...

    Bonitos Everywhere on Balboa Pier

Yesterday the bonitos decided to be with us from early morning until 4p.m. It was just before noon when they broke everywhere on the pier. We had a tremendous amount of bait all around and they were after it. The bonitos were about 16 inches which is much better than they have been.They...
