A compilation of Bodega Harbor clamming reports (long!)

Recently got into clamming in California and happened upon this great post, and have tons of questions so apologies in advance for the bombardment! I noticed you went clamming in the summer... I recall advice to avoid shellfish in months without the letter "r" due to toxic algal blooms and...

Port San Luis Pier at 2023 year end

Seemed like business as usual at that pier... cars still driving to and parking at the end of the pier, bait shop was open, the restaurant and the fish market both seemed bustling, visitors and families strolling along in both directions. Did observe some violent waves crashing over the...

Port San Luis Pier at 2023 year end

Oh and i was super impressed by the reach of the Cal Poly Pier when I passed by. Too bad it's not a fishing pier.

Port San Luis Pier at 2023 year end

Was visiting the Central Coast the final weekend of 2023, and decided to check out the Port San Luis (Harford) Pier for the first time (I noted that San Simeon Pier and Avila Beach Pier were both out of commission). Saturday Dec 30 had decent weather in the afternoon 3:30-4:30 pm when I was...

Advice for a December visit to San Diego?

Sounds really cool, thank you so much! Having read through Ken's writeup on the website, but otherwise not finding a lot of information about this, is Sharkey's Bait and Tackle open on the pier?

Advice for a December visit to San Diego?

Yes I do have a fishing license. If there is a possibility to take something home, I'd definitely be interested, but that is not my primary aim (plus I would have to think about shipping logistics). If there's a tasty pan-sized catch, I'm not against grilling it whole outdoors while there (no...

Advice for a December visit to San Diego?

Hi all, I'll be in SD attending a conference spanning the second weekend of December, and staying by the convention center. I know Embarcadero Marina South has a pier, and of course would love to hear what species are there, but curious in general what opportunities are available (and angling...

    What kelpfish is this?

Wow ok I was way off. Thank you for the ID! Yes Salt Point is an MPA, but you're allowed to take finfish with the exception of Gerstle Cove, which is completely off limits. [link here, and screenshot attached] https://wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Marine/MPAs/Salt-Point-Gerstle-Cove

    What kelpfish is this?

Caught off the rocks at Salt Point State Park. Estimate about 5 inches. I think it's either a striped or a crevice, but hoping someone more knowledgeable can identify the species? Would love to learn what the distinguishing features are for each.

Unusual sighting (delayed from March 2022)

Stupid autocorrect. Mid March, not mid May.

Unusual sighting (delayed from March 2022)

Spiny lobster lifted out of a crab net at Pillar Point Harbor Pier (Half Moon Bay), mid May 2022. Some on the pier joked that it was an lucky escapee from Barbara's. It does raise concerns about global warming, HMB in March ought to be too cold for these guys???

    is this a queenfish?

I can confirm that it was tasty when pan-fried. It really reminded me of the American silver perch, Bairdiella chrysoura, that I used to catch in the summer. Wonder if it occupies a similar niche in its ecosystem as the queenfish.

    is this a queenfish?

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and new to California saltwater angling. Nice to meet you all. I'm still exploring all the fishing opportunities around here, and learning to identify species of course. Pierfishing.com is definitely a great resource! I caught this fish today at Pacifica Pier, and...
