    SF Bay Red Tide

Seeing lots of reports of dead fish in the bay and Lake Merritt, ranging from gobies to stripers and sturgeon. This fish kill is sad and unprecedented. One naturalist I follow was speculating that the algal bloom may have been accelerated by an accidental discharge of nutrient rich water into...

    King Tides Fishing Tips?

Some high highs and low lows this week in the tide department. Any tips or observations about fishing (pier or shore) the king tides when there's a lot of water moving around?

    Sabiki Rigs

Only this spring have I started to catch small sardines in my usual anchovy spots. Kinda odd since there's such an anchovy boom this year that they're falling from the skies and washing up on shore by the millions. Today I went to Fort Mason and Fort Point but only was able to sabiki up a...

    Sabiki Rigs

I love me some sabikis! I've heard about the Hayabusa brand but my local bait shop (shout out to Phu Quy's on 14th Ave in Oakland!) only has another no-name kind (see photo) so that's what I use. Fish I've caught with sabikis over at the SF piers: anchovies, sardines, walleye surfperch...

    Perch Report - HMB Beach

Finally ran into a bit of success (and luck) at the beach the other evening just before high tide. Caught two decent sized BSP within a few minutes of each other. Both males and the bigger of the two was just shy of 12". These perch fight pretty hard for their size! I kept both for dinner. I...

    SMC Rocks and Surf 6/17

Spent the day on the San Mateo county coast. There was a big minus tide early so I went to my rocky spot. Tried to poke pole for a bit but eventually switched to the spinning setup and nabbed a nice 11" grass rockfish with a chunk of squid on a dropper loop. I used my "eco-friendly" sinkers...

Planning to be near Seacliff Beach last week of July

Why the long leader if there's a lot of fishing pressure?

    SF Bay halibut bite

Fascinating that the shore fishing for halibut is so lousy at the same time that the bite from SF Bay boats is "the best in recent memory", "legendary", and "doesn't get any better than this!" (According to one sports fishing outfit out of Berkeley).

    SF Bay halibut bite

Apparently the party boat halibut bite is wide open right now. Anyone having any luck from shore?

    Just wondering & curious...

I think 100 views per post is fairly normal for these things and is not indicative of anything fishing related: LINK

    How many people...

I use both! I wish I could actually search the archive. And what happened to all the posts from 2008 to 2018? I wish they were accessible too.

    Fort Mason pier access?

Photo of the shad that I thought were herring. Hard to see here but there's a row of black dots down the sides that distinguish them from herring.

    Fort Mason pier access?

Went to Fort Mason yesterday in search of baitfish. When I arrived a woman from the "Festival Pavilion" (the east-most pier) requested that I stay off of the pier and only fish from the rail by the firehouse. This seemed wrong to me but, not wanting any problems, I complied. There was a family...

    Sand crabs... Great Bait

Yeah it's ambiguous at best. Not sure if they intentionally were trying to outlaw dip nets or if it's just badly worded. Those dip nets get chewed up pretty fast...I wanted to make a little metal mesh rake but am not sure if it's legal now.

    Sand crabs... Great Bait

Apparently taking sand crabs with a dip net is no longer allowed? See 2022 regs below. (h) Gear Restrictions. It shall be unlawful to use anything other than the following hand-operated devices to take sand crabs or shrimp: spades, shovels, hoes, forks, rakes, devices that use suction commonly...
