    Report: 11/2 Crab Opener 2019

    Pacifica Pier was packed on the opener. Probably 1000 people on the pier. I managed to catch 2 keeper male dugneness, 2 keeper rock crabs and probably 20+ berried females (all released) from 11AM to 10PM. One male was a monster 7 1/2", which is the biggest I've ever caught! Some of the regulars...

    Where are the salmon?

    Well I couldn't wait till the weekend. My *cough* Salmon Fever *cough* started acting up so I called in sick and went to the "doctor" on 1st Street for a "therapy session" yesterday 10/9. Hallelujah I was "cured" and caught a 15lb male. About a dozen others were "cured" of their illness too...

    Where are the salmon?

    Sunday was *almost* as good as Saturday, with about 20 fish caught. Unfortunately I wasn't one of the lucky ones this weekend because I reset my 1000 cast counter the previous Sunday with a 14 lber at the state park. Hopefully another salmon will be waiting for me next weekend.

    This was my 7th trip out. I spend about 4 hours per trip. I timed my casts to be about two minutes per cast, 30 per hour. That's 840 casts. It's been called "a fish of a thousand casts", and by my math that's about right.

    Yep, I was the only one in the shallows to catch one that morning. The next guy to my left to catch one was in the middle. He posted a youtube video of it under the account "scorpiontube712".

    I was at Benicia State Park this past Wednesday from 8am-12pm. No salmon were caught, but the sea lions are actively patrolling so they must be around.

    How strong should be leader?

    Your experience matches mine. Fluorocarbon has much lower knot strength than nylon. I've found that one or two extra turns in the Uniknot, improved clinch knot, or Trilene knot are needed to maintain breaking strength compared to nylon. Typically I'll go with an 8 turn Trilene knot, sometimes...
