Greeting Tight Liners!!! A quick Summary Of my catalina Spearfishing trip

#1
I went to Catalina for an excursion from June 4 - 7, I slept on the boat while my patrons slept on the island hotel, there were 6 on my boat. We left san pedro for catalina after filling the tank the day before, and getting live bait, mix of anchovie and sardines, we Arrived to catalina after 1.5 hours ride going about 17-19 knots. The boat ran smooth getting to the island, After talking to port harbor patrol getting our mooring for $43.00 a night.

We set off for Pebbly Beach first, The divers in the water for about three hours I was fishing with anchovies and squid, tried the splasher bubble for bonita, caught nothing at pebbly beach. the diver didnt do so well, the visibilty was poor maybe 10 ft. We went to Frog rock after that, and still water was murky 10ft or less windy too. We didnt catch anything fishing, everytime we anchor and are set, i would throw out the bonita rig and try my luck maybe about 10-15 cast, did not see any action water was really choppy with the wind. so after two hours there we decided to call it a day, came back to avalon, and set the mooring, the patrons went to eat on the island as so did i, returning to my boat around 8:30ish.

during the night i do my normal rounds of checking the boat, while doing that, i threw out a slider with a dead sardine near out my mooring while working on the boat, the i would get hits strong hits on the sardine, the line was screaming!!!! i knew it was a huge bat ray, i couldnt even get it to stop running, line screaming!! i couldnt reel the bat ray in i had 50 pound braid line, the ray bent my hook, and sometime break my hook, had several lost rigs for about an hour, each hook up was hard and ferocious!!!

Three night of fishing like that, each hit was HARD and fast!! Line screaming it was fun!!! but only on sardine, they wouldnt bite squid, or anchovies just dead sardines. the diver after three days caught sheepheads and one nice calico, they were looking for white sea bass and yellow tails. that was the goal, but they saw nothing. we went to seal rock all the way down to K29, but K29 produced some nice sheephead fishing on squid, but the divers only saw 2 big black sea bass under my boat, im hoping to get a video from one of the divers if it comes out.

I think for diving need another two to three weeks for it to be prime for doing that SPORT, so in july im heading out to catalina once again, for a 3-4 day excursion, but this time im going with a heavier rig for bat rays. hahaha

funny though my body is still swaying from being on my boat all the time only touching land for a few hours a day. hahahah

Oh the Spearfishing freediver did see some yellowtail, but they were to far to be shot at, at K29 area. thats near whites landing.

TIGHT LINES!!!
