We were having a class for young anglers at the San Clemente Pier and the lady from Fish & Wildlife walked up and said would you give us a few words on pier fishing? So, spur of the moment and not the greatest but I think I got the main points across.

BTW, they put in baiting a hoop net for bait; wrong! You need a smaller mesh drop net/umbrella drop net to catch the bait. The baitfish would go right through the mesh of a hoop net.

Hi Ken.

Informative video! Always nice to re-watch and re-educate.

With the 4 pier zones how do you optimize / prioritize where to fish along the pier? I know target species would be a factor but just wondering what else?

Thanks.

I tend to target certain species but a good way is to concentrate on inshore species when the tides are right and then move further out on the pier when the tides recede. However, I will often walk the entire pier when I first arrive and see where the fish are being caught (if they are being caught). Sometimes a certain species is hot and I'll target that. If things are slow, I go back to what I originally intended to target. Given that I buy the baits that I think will work for the intended species, I usually at some point am targeting those species.

I'm thinking some of this type information can be worked into the YouTube videos. This was a spur of the moment, unplanned talk where they just asked me to say a little about pier fishing. I imagine with a little planning it could be much better.

Thanks for the input. A lot of the time I do not have a target species but walking down the pier and looking at the fishing activity helps. Your pier articles have been very helpful in this aspect as it mentions what fish species are common within a pier.

The YouTube video was excellent and I liked how you emphasize no need for expensive gear. :D
