Hi,

We went to Capitola and rented a skiff there past Saturday. We were relatively successful at getting mackerel, both the chub (most frequently) and the jack (less frequently, but bigger). They were almost all close to the wharf, so that casting from there should reward some mackerels. In fact, I got one from the wharf with a regular sabiki (size 8 hooks) just 5 minutes before jumping on the skiff.

Anchovies are also around, but not taking the sabiki yet.

Thanks for the report. Okay, Pacific mackerel or chub mackerel -scomber japonicus. Jack mackerel-trachurus symmetricus. Where there actually jack mackerel because these are about 2 feet long? Also, how was the luck on the skiff?

Hi,
You are right with the scientific - latin names.
Both where small if you compare with 2 feet. I would say the chub were around 9 inches, the jack around 11.

Except one, that was so big it broke my 200lb line and my titanium-steel-tungsten alloy fishing pole. Right after breaking it I woke up ;-)
