Newport Pier

My old stomping ground! I've always considered Newport and Redondo as two of the best piers as far as mackerel although when I first fished Newport in the early '60s I caught as many bonito as mackerel.

Must be nice down there in LA... reminds me of my trips with family to see more family down there during summer vacation. One time I visited Venice beach with all 5 of my cousins. Fishing wasn’t slow, but consistent enough to keep us occupied, even though rods ended up on the floor, sabikis got tangled and no one wanted to touch the fish. Good times man, and best of luck to you on your next trips on those SoCal piers.

I have yet to catch a bonito but i have a feeling with the water temperature that this will change soon

Yeah, used to sneak out at nights and do a little pier fishing in my teens. The pier used to open all night (never closed). I remember when there was a squid run in the late 70's early 80's.. the pier was so full it was shoulder to shoulder.
