Newport Jetty, M Street Pier 5/3/22

Went out to the Newport Jetty. Fished from 6:30AM - 10AM. Lots of current and swell which means snag city. Fished a sabiki under a float looking for mackerel and got no bites. Switched to a smaller single hook and got small bites near the rocks but didn't hook any fish. My friend landed a couple smaller black perch near the rocks.

We left and went to the M Street pier just down the street and just as we were arriving saw someone hook a larger fish that broke him off. As we were rigging up, the same angler landed a 10" Spotted Bay Bass. He said that he was landing spotties and calicos all morning including a few keeper sized fish.

I dropped a medium size sabiki to look for bites and found a steady bite right near the pier/dock. This turned out to be a school of shiner perch. I got a couple decent bites throwing a tube bait but I think my bait was a little to large as both times the fish grabbed the bait and ran and I ended up pulling the bait before the fish got the hook in their mouth.

Fished for another 90 minutes here landing a handful of shiner perch, a kelp fish, a small calico, and a good sized mackerel. This was my first time fishing this little M Street pier near the jetty. It was fun. Kind of reminded me like a mini Dana Point Pier. Seems like a good fall back if you don't want to walk the rocks on the jetty.

Next time I'll come with an array of plastics. I want to build my confidence with artificial baits and this seems like a good place to do that.

If they are not too big put one of those shiner perch back out as bait. M street is pretty good for halibut from time to time.

Warden has checked about 50% of the time I’ve fished there. Always someone busted. I believe there is a sign saying a license is required but I’m not 100% sure. Also people tend to post up there with 3-4 rods sometimes. Very annoying.

Anybody who fishes the docks there should be aware that license is required.

There should be signs indicating the requirement.
Yes! Good point! License is required and warden did come by and check. He was nice and seemed genuinely interested in the fishing.

Be careful though, I believe those small piers/docks also have city ordinances that may have more specific restrictions. If I remember correctly, I think they are posted by each spot.

I know there are a couple they have redone in the last 15 years and they no longer allow fishing on them. On Lido island the security from the homeowners association will kick you off the docks if you are not a resident. Not aware of any other restrictions other than the 10 pm curfew
