Quick Report Dana Point Jetty/Pier 2/28/22

My girlfriend and I went to the Dana Point Pier/Jetty on Sunday. We arrived at the Pier at 9AM and started fishing hi lo rigs with 8lb test with market shrimp. No bites at the pier so we made our way to the jetty. As I suspected, my girlfriend found the Dana Point Jetty much easier to walk than the Newport Jetty. So we had an easier time making our way 1/3 of the way out to the bend.

Our idea was to try to more specifically target Opaleye but bites using green peas were hard to come by on the jetty. We switched back to fishing a mix of lug worms and market shrimp and caught 3 black perch between us. Surf was high and combined with the wind made the jetty fishing less than comfortable. It was easier to get bites on the jetty but noticeable slower than on my last trip.

We made our way back the pier. We are getting very small bites on our high low rigs but could not hook any fish. I used a small hook sabiki on another rod (size 4 Hayabusa) and caught 4 smelt and a shiner perch. Put one of the smaller smelt on a hook but got no takers under the pier or casting 10-20 feet out off the end and the right side. We left at 2PM.

You take a gander at the bend yet? i believe it was one or two sketchy rocks that you need to get past in order to move to the straight away. Not sure of their situation right now, but the reason why I stopped going was the copious amount of bird poop made everything too slippery to attempt the crossing.
Keep up the good work over there. Might need to check out that jetty again.

Haven't gone past the bend yet. Maybe I'll try next time. What I've been wanting to do is dedicate a full day to fishing one of the local jetties to compare the numbers and the experience to the Mole in Catalina. I think I'll try that this next Sunday at either Newport or Dana Point.

I suggest pack light if you do intend to venture past the bend. It was one real sketchy rock that you need to get over. It's going to be hard to compare to the mole honestly, but I do feel dana would produce better numbers than Newport just based off the smaller amount of foot traffic you get past the bend. Keep in mind, I primarily throw lures though.
If you can, search for frozendog's old reports. I believe he used to fish dana pretty regularly and was quite successful at it too.

Thanks.

The restaurant next to it also has good food.

You can also try by the fuel dock and the short jetty. If you fish the short jetty fish the end and/or the bend by the bait barge. If you fish by the fuel dock the corner by the channel is best. You can throw lures or bait fish (anchovies seem to work best, but bites come on anything). Many varieties can be caught, but mostly croaker (yellow fin and spot fin). You can even get lobster (but don't forget hook and line catching you have to return). No way to use lobster traps. This jetty is easier to walk than long jetty (for girlfriend).
