Huntington Beach Pier - 2/5/2022

Went fishing in the early morning Saturday from 6:30 am to 11 am with my 9 yr old, WIfe and Brother. Not much action on the bigger fish, but steady action on what looked like small anchovies, sardines, and smelt on a Sabiki rig. If you looked carefully, you could see the schools of baitfish just past the shadow of the pier. Was able to catch and release only keeping what I need for my bigger rod until we lost the rod with the Sabiki to an accident. Overall it was a great day of catching fish and soaking up the sun. Looking forward to doing it again soon.

So just wondering - how did you lose the rod?

I was assisting my 9 yr old with casting out to the school of bait fish about 20 years from the pier and when I was bringing the rod back over the rail, I hit the top rail and the rod came out of my hand. I mistake, I should have had a better grip and used two hands, but I got comfortable.

sorry for your lost rod. did you try to retract it by fishing for the line? maybe line was not cast out yet...

Sometimes trying to retrieve a sunk rod can be a fun challenge and nerve racking at the same time. I would go back and try to get it, hook it with a treble

We definitely tried to retrieve it, but your suggestion to use a treble hook is a good one. I will have to look into it and see if we can get lucky. I have also purchased tethers to hopefully prevent it in the future.

Good Morning Brock. I have been taking my kids out fishing since a young age. Started them off with casting practice at about 5 years of age. They have enjoyed it and so have I.

Or a strong magnet, the type people use for magnet fishing.

I’m surprised there aren’t any big sharks there yet. Nothing doing on the sharks in SF Bay away from the deep water channel either, but soon I imagine.
