I've put in a feature request with the phpBB community to see if anyone will work on this for phpBB3. Of course, we'd have to upgrade to phpBB3 to actually use it! :) My suggestions were:
- always mark as read (so you don't see the new post indicator)
- stop floating it to the top (like a pseudo-lock function)
- grey out the thread title to give it less visual prominence
- hide the thread entirely and maybe have a preference where you can view hidden threads
- etc.
