It happened to me in a boat off the rockwall on 5/17. I was drifting frozen 'chovy with a 1 oz. hair raiser for a sinker. Got a hard take down and on my reaction strike felt nothing until the end of my pull, then a solid hook up followed by a line-stripping run. But the fish changed direction and I was able to get some line back and hold on. I thought I had the mother of all halibut, I was feeling head shakes and tail thrusts. About a minute into the fight the fish came up and jumped completely clear of the water with a tremendous splash. That's when I saw it was a large bat ray. I was using 14 lb. mono, and if it had run straight away I would never have been able to stop it. When I finally got it in the net, I saw that it was hooked in the wing on the stinger hook for the anchovy. I think it hit the jig and got foul hooked by the trailing 'chovy hook on my reaction strike. The ray was 3-4 ft. wingspan, maybe 40-50 lbs., but what a fight!
