A foul hooked ray will feel like a big striper or sturgeon especially when foul hook on the wing. When the wings flap, it REALLY feels like a head shke. Fooled me a lot of times. Maybe the tap tap tap was your line rubbing against it before it got snagged. Guess we'll never know for sure...
