Happened to me in Humboldt bay with my 10 ft shore pole and 30 lb test.
An event you'll remember till you die. Didn't quite get spooled. When I saw it was close, a put the drag down all the way and it ( bat ray ?)straightened my hook. Darn Gamakatsu's
