I decided to go and try to fish this hot spot at the Alameda rockwall that I've been hearing about. It was a long walk down the wall! I started fishing at about 10:30 am with my 8 1/2 feet steelhead rod with a spare reel I have, which was to small for this pole. The reel had about 100 yards of 30.lb braid so I thought I might be okay. I started throwing a white hair raiser and bouncing it off the bottom. About half an hour in I get a little hit and I set the hook, fish on. The moment the hook grab hold the fish started to pull the opposite way out towards the ocean. It didn't stop at all and I noticed 3/4 of my line is gone and it's still running. I instantly tighten my drag, then tighter, then tighter and it was still going. I then set my drag to the fullist but that didn't help. Now I could see the core on my reel then snap, line all gone. I'm not sure what it was but I'm gonna be optomistic about it and say it was a 30+" big butt.
After I got spooled it went dead quite. I did see a couple shaker buts caught earlier today and a couple small bat rays. I'm gonna head out there again tomorrow with heavier gear and hope for the best.
