Haven't been fishing pretty much all year, and my nephew recently asked about hitting the jetty, so we got out there from about 1pm-530pm today.

Conditions weren't so great; overcast with fairly strong winds, choppy seas, and wave sets rolling in. Tried fishing toward the end, but it was rough and after losing a few rigs we moved. Another guy fishing near the end hooked up with something quality on his first cast, which turned out to be a nice 17" Calico.

As for us, we were using 2 or 3 ounces of lead with a single dropper loop and anywhere from size 2 through 1/0 hooks, with cut anchovy for bait. The first two hours were fairly slow, although we ended up catching about 15-20 fish in all, including Calico and Sand Bass, Brown Rockfish, a stingray, and even a Garibaldi which downed a huge chunk of cut anchovy. Three of the Calicos were legal, so they came home for dinner. Two other Calicos were just under 12", so they and all the other fish went back in the drink. My early-June reports usually give a glimpse of how the fishing will be on the jetty throughout the summer, and this is a good sign.

This shot gives an idea about the conditions out there today. It captures the calm between the sets of big waves.

I agree - nice to hear from you. Glad to see some reports from the far southland. Interesting how the one calico is dark brown and the others a different color. I have almost forgotten what a calico bass looks like. I would rather catch a calico bass, but I would rather eat a rockfish. The bass put up a good fight. So, get out and fish some more and post some more.
