My afternoon class was cancelled today, and since the weather decided to make a huge turnaround compared to the last few weeks, I chose to hit the beach and hunt for some redtails.

The tides were very big today (which I wanted) and the waves were nice, only in the 4-6 foot range. However, water clarity left much to be desired. While it wasn't chocolate, it wasn't clear by any means. I had frozen ghost shrimp and Berkley Gulp! sandworms, and fished both for about the same amount of time. The ghost shrimp got bit a lot more often than the sandworms, which I attributed to the high amount of scent the shrimp was putting out compared to the sand worms. With the sucky water clarity, I believe the scent factor was the main reason I had more bites on the shrimp. Unfortunately, I also found that frozen ghost shrimp doesn't stay on the hook very well, which made it a pain to cast any meaningful distance. While I had quite a few bites, I was only able to stick 4 redtails: 3 in the 9-10 inch range, and 1 bigger guy (pictured). Three of the fish came on ghost shrimp, and I was able to scratch up one fish on the sandworm. Overall it was a very nice day, a little chilly but the wind stayed down, with the sun poking out every now and then. Didn't see anyone else fishing, just a few surfers and people walking their dogs.

Weather's supposed to kick back up by the weekend, so I might head back out tomorrow morning for another session. If I go, I'm going to bring some market shrimp with me instead of ghosties.

Haha, you got a keen eye Dan! Yeah, I got a 8'6" Rock Creek Lamiglas steelhead outfit last December. It's one of the lower-tier Lamiglas lines, but whatever, I like it anyway. My girlfriend works at the local CVS and she hooked me up with an awesome deal that I couldn't refuse. First new rod I've bought in several years. It's a lot lighter than the ole 'Stik, although I think I'll have to take much better care of this rod than I do my Ugly Stik.

Ya know, its amazing how durable the ugly stick lights are. Mine lasted 5 years before an insert came out(nothin but straight abuse). And I finally broke the tip just a few weeks ago. Correction, my g/f slammed the door on it actually. Anyways, the high end stuff sure is nice. Light, sensitive, etc. But it all breaks SO easy! I just picked up a new lami steelhead myself(higher end - made in the USA). Haven't even used it yet, so I can't say anything about it. Super steal though, got if from sports authority for 50% off... $100 total. Also got a new ugly stick, for 25$. Anyways, look forward to some spring jetty reports!

Nice redtail.Soggy ghost shrimp would be tough to hook anything with but you fish with the bait you have.I keep small bags of market shrimp in the freezer for bait buy I usually eat them first. Were you fishing back by the lumber mill? I'll bet the water in the bay looks like chocolate milk from all the rain and the runoff.

Yeah, actually just across the street from the mill. I went back out there this morning. The water is clearing nicely. Today it was a chalky green color. Had some good action on market shrimp...caught about a dozen redtails and a staghorn sculpin, but all but two of the redtails were undersized. Still looking for concentrations of the bigger guys.

Driving over the Highway 255 bridge today, I could see the bay is still very murky. The inlet streams from the north side are still puking mud too, although they are beginning to recede. The swells were mellow enough today to almost make me hit the north jetty for rockfish, but with all the murky water I didn't try it.

Two legal RTs out of a dozen total sounds about right, in my experience.
