|It's already been said but worth repeating—nice report and good pictures. And, that's my kind of trip although I'm usually just hitting the piers not the rocks.
A couple of things—
1. You experienced the "slow" San Simeon which, unfortunately, happens more than the "hot action" San Simeon. It's a pier than be be really good or really bad.
2. The second small croaker you were catching at Newport were queenfish (usually called herring in SoCal), a cousin of white croaker (usually called tomcod in SoCal, kingfish further north). Traditionally queenfish and white croaker have ranked in the top five of fish caught from SoCal piers as far as straight numbers.
