Just got back from Lake Mendo, fishing (and winning) the 1st Anual(?) Bendo at Mendo Kayak Tournie. I believe there were thirty five or so kayaks. Each of our $30 entry fees was donated to the Red Cross so I got bragging rights only, but that money went to a good cause. Also, one of the members' work may match our contribution, bringing the total to just over $2,000. We also raised another $200 or so from the raffle that was held. That money will be donated to the striper foundation that stocks the Lake Mendo stripers. I also won a NorCalKayakAngler sweatshirt and about 50 various swimbaits in the raffle. Plus I caught my first smallmouth ever. WOW. Those fish are studs. Mine was a ~2.5 pounder, but he fought like a champ. Other catches over the week-end were two 10# range channel cats, and one 20lber! Along with a couple of other big smallmouths. All caught on live minnows.

Below is a pic of my winning fish. 11.57lbs bled, and it was donated to the potluck we had and deep fried. I woulda released it, but it was gut hooked pretty bad, and basically floating belly up by the time I brought it in. It was delicious deep fried!

It was caught slow trolling a live minnow. I'm sure there'll be a ton of posts and pictures tomorrow on the norcalkayakangler website if anyone is interested.

FYI - Here's the thread on NCKA.com.

Nice Going RH!

This time of the year, smallies are powerful diggers. Wait 'til you get one when the water clears, say november/early december... purely acrobatic! If you care, Berryessa's got a quite a few on the shore across the free launch ramp. Just be careful... lotz of ticks in the overhanging trees.

Good stuff D. I was just about to ask if I could buy your kayak... Thought you may have just won another.

Glad to see the money donated to a good cause.

Another shot after "digging in". A tow truck had to come and get it out. After the tow truck got itself unstuck!

Very nice fish RH! And congrats on your victory. I know what you mean about smallmouth: pound for pound, they're one of the hardest fighting freshwater fish around. I love fishing plastic worms for them in the springtime at Lake Almanor...if you hook into a 3-4 pounder on light tackle, you're in for a fight!
