The good old days.
One of my valued possessions are a rod and reel that Gdude (may he rest in light as the Turkish saying goes) had made and gave me.
About the third GTG in Catalina; Gdude had just caught his fifth bonito when he handed to me the rig that he was using. Up to then I had not landed a single bonito even though I was using everything the others were using. I had hooked one, but a sea lion took the fish along with all my braid on the spool.

I quickly hooked six and landed three. Monkey off my back. I was elated. I immediately offered to purchase the setup which included a Buzzbomb lure from Canada. Later I lost that lure in Hermosa from the pier after catching a lot of mackerel in cast after cast.

He simply said “keep it”. I was surprised and loving it. May he rest in peace.

Well the rest is as they say “history”. By now I had the fortune of landing many bonitos.
