Unfortunately most of the large piers in the bay have one problem or another. Fort Baker (Sausalito), Fort Point (SF) and Pier 7 (SF) are large and open at night but are not particularly good piers for rays.
McNear and Point Pinole close at night and are not that great for rays.
Dumbarton is good for rays but closes at night.
I think Paradise would be a decent large pier that gets good numbers of rays, and has nice facilities, but again we would have to do the derby during the day so it might stop some from attending.
The Alameda breakwall and other shore spots might work for some but people would need a license (and some spots are still closed at night). |
Maybe you could make up an electronic survey sheet and we could get an idea of how
many are still interested in such an event and where they would like to see it happen.
Then we could get some kind of data before the spring comes around. I am really wondering what our numbers are looking like these days.
Dumbarton has rays/sharks but you can’t fish there at low tide (save the end). Alameda Rockwall, you can fish low or high tide and is a “public pier.” Just no rails or rod holders and we would need to have a couple nets with handles about 8 feet long or so.
Again, I would like input from “the younger generation,” i.e., Justin Morris. He could promote attendance if he decided to participate
