Since we are are in a questioning state. I know some of last yearís spawn are 10 months old and still in the areas they hatched. But, where are this yearís egg-layers? Any inside the gate yet? When they arrive, sturgeon should be in the bay (and not just the rivers/marshes/sloughs). Thanks for any useful information!
I guess it is time for me to check the herring hotline...

The fish must be staging up now in the deep water channels letting their gonads mature. Letís see what happens in two weeks. https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Commercial/Herring

Forgive the semi-hijack ... Can you catch them on a sabiki when they're spawning, or are they not biting and you always use a cast net?

you can catch them on the sabiki, but most people use the cast nets

Yeah, sabikis are especially handy when the tides are moving out and the herring move out when you are on the shore. You can still cast out to them and jig all the way back in, hitting the bottom and pulling up, and still get them.
