I was fishing Crissy Field this morning and saw this dead leopard shark that washed up near the sea plane ramp. I'd say it was about 2 feet long. I wonder what killed it. It did not have any marks on it.

I have been seeing lone leopard sharks swimming along the top of the water within the last couple months. I have also seen about 10 carcasses in various spots along the south bay. My friend said there was a news article that stated it was caused by the runoff from this past rainy season from our streets.

Dang that sucks, I too wonder what's going on with the sharks. I was at Oyster Point today brought over some baby seven gills. One of the fisherman said he seen some fat 3-4 foot leopards just coasting the surface...

There has recently been a huge die-off of leopards in the bay. Since leopards don't have swim bladders they sink when they die.

Supposedly there were huge areas in the south bay where the bottom was just littered with dead and dying leopard shark recently.

Dang....Now I am really happy to have released the 5 foot female Leo I caught in San Clemente 2 weeks back. Hopefully she can help replace some of those lost.
