These are pictures from several fishing trips in August. I did get a chance to get up to Humboldt in August and fish on the North and South jetties. But mostly these are from my usual rocky spots on the Central Coast.

Most of my fishing is done with an 11ft rod and a conventional reel with three and four oz. sinkers with a single hook leader that I make up. I make up lots of those leaders because I cast into the kelp and rocks where the fish are and lose a lot of tackle. Mostly, I use fresh smelt for bait (if I can catch some) but I always take along some frozen squid.

When I cast out I am trying to catch a grass rockfish. But sometimes, they are just not home. That’s why I bring along some squid and will try for some cabs. That’s what happned. Grassies weren’t biting, used some squid, and caught two keeper cabs. Those were the only cabs I caught all month.

Got to spend a week in Humboldt county where I tried to fish both Eureka jetties. I haven’t been up there is seven or eight years and there have been so many changes! The road to the South jetty has eroded really badly in some spots. Driving was difficult even in a truck. Then when I finally got there, I just wasn’t as comfortable fishing on the rocks anymore. I spent the rest of the trip on the North jetty. Road wasn’t bad, but big chunks of the jetty were missing - time and storms have taken a toll. I wasn’t comfortable fishing at some of the places I have fished in the past, again. The brain was telling me “NO” and so was my wife. I was able to fish some plastics and caught lots of 12” black rockfish which became fish tacos for lots of dinners. I’m glad I knew the limit on black rockfish was three as I did get checked by the fish and game.

8/3
The second cast of the day was a nice black and yellow rockfish. I thought, “Oh good, the fishing are biting!” but that was not the case. I had to fish all day, until early afternoon before I got another bite which turned out to be a 15” grass rockfish. I worked for that fish.

The last supper.... of the month:
This is one of my favorite preps. I probably use this one most often. Made a simple orange sauce that I poured over the coated and sauted fish filets and served the fish with some fried rice and grilled pineapple

Wow those are some beautiful fish you caught yourself there! The glare on the c&r photo is such that I can't make out the measurement. How big was it?

Love the coloring on those black and yellows too. So many pretty rockfish out there.

Twenty inches of mean and mad rockfish, even though I was trying to release him.
