Hi everyone,

I'm going down to LA (I live in SF) to visit my 82 year old dad and I want to take him out fishing--it's probably been 35 years since we've fished together.

He likes to get out of the San Fernando Valley on Fridays and drive to the beach to get out of the oppressive heat. I thought that we could go to the Malibu pier and do some fishing.

So, any suggestions of what to fish for there (rigs, bait, etc.) that might be easy for an older gentleman to enjoy? Or if you think another pier might be better, your suggestions are more than welcome.

I don't know how many more fishing outings we'll get in, so I'd like to make this a memorable one.

I would take him to Malibu although the parking can be a nightmare at times. Perhaps by that date the schools will be in session and the parking will not be too bad.

I will be calling Ginny at Wylie's tomorrow so should have an update on the fishing. If you've never been there stop in at her shop. It's on the way and both she and her (historic/iconic) shop are a delight!

Wylie’s Bait & Tackle
18757 Pacific Coast Hwy Malibu
Live tube worms(usually), frozen anchovies, squid, and mackerel.

Ken,

Thanks so much for the advise. I'll absolutely stop by the tackle shop you recommend!

Malibu Pier — Ginny at Wylie’s Bait and Tackle says the fishing at the pier has been really good lately. She say’s there are a LOT of mackerel along with some bass and too many lizardfish. There’s also been a lot of sharks including nice-sized leopard sharks and shovelnose sharks (guitarfish) along the sides of the pier, while some threshers have been taken at the end of the pier. A few croakers have been taken inshore. As for the mackerel, she says the kids all swear by the 1-oz. Deception lures she sells although some people continue to use Sabiki bait-rigs. The one bad news was that a youngster had his rod and expensive Avet reel stolen so keep an eye on your equipment. How To Get There: The pier fronts on the Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1) so just drive until you see it.

Well, we ended up going to Venice Pier after all the great advice I received about Malibu.

I took an old Abu Garcia rod and reel that had been sitting around for ages in my dad's garage to Bob Sands bait and tackle shop in the valley. They cleaned it up and put on fresh line.

With a high low rig baited with shrimp (and later with mackerel), we caught quite a few mackerel--very good fighters on light tackle. Gave them all away to some other folks around us.

Most importantly, we both had a great time, and it brought back lots of memories.

Here's a pic of him reeling in the (not so big) ones!

Looking forward to the next trip down to So Cal.
