The derby is this Saturday from 10-2 and I just talked to one of the men from there who says they could use a few more bodies to help out.

Registration will start around 9;15-9:30 and the kids will fish from 10 until about 1:30 when they will break for lunch and the awards ceremony.

If the past couple of years are an example, PFIC members who help out will probably stay on the pier and fish together for a few hours after the derby. Last year there was a group of a half dozen or so and I think some stripers and bat rays were caught.

As for helpers, we need a few people to help Rita rig up the rod/reels and possibly a few people to help as judges during the event.

It's a fun event and if you've never fished the usually private pier this is your chance to give it a shot.

I talked to MR&G today and they are a little concerned since they have not had as many people sign up as usual.

We oould use a few more bodies to help out and we could use a few more 1-2 ounce sinkers.

PFIC people I've talked to plan to fish together on the pier after the derby is over. A decent pier for stripers and bat rays as well as halibut (if you know what you're doing). I think three small halibut were caught by the kids last year. Also pretty good for leopard sharks but I haven't seen a sturgeon yet. Of course probably not the right time for sturgeon.

I will be there. I'll try to get there as early as possible to help Rita out. Also, do you know if kids have to be pre registered or can they just show up?

Another successful kids' derby with lots of fish caught. Story/pic to follow.

Final tally: 57 youngsters who managed to catch 78 fish. Fish species and numbers: Jacksmelt 55; Striped Bass 7; Halibut 7; Bat Ray 5; Leopard Shark 3; Blackperch 1. A pretty good day for the kids.
