|Headed down to Huntington pier for a bait session. Got to the pier at 6:30, and initially, fishing was slow. As the sun came up, the mackerel came in hordes. I lost three sabikis to tangles, so I switched to a triple dropper loop with a float on top, baited with cut mackerel. This resulted in less tangles. The trick was not to move the rig. The larger mackerel liked to hit still, suspended baits. A bonito came around and attacked some baitfish, but was not interested in playing with anything. I chucked out a live smelt and hooked what I think was a barracuda. It bit through the fluoro leader. Ended the day with 31 mackerel, one jacksmelt, and a lizardfish. All of it is either vacuum packed or salted down. No need to buy bait for a while.
