I was doing an online research on how to catch opaleye and found this close to 4 year old tread with the information I was looking for,
also a tread from another website I don't know if it's ok to post it but here it is;
http://www.allcoast.com/discussion/ViewTopic.cfm?topic_ID=86318

yesterday after I went to the end of the longest jetty of Ventura Harbor,
I met two guys fishing in there,
one of the guys told me that about two years ago he was at the same location with another friend and they were catching "big green fish" using green peas as bait and also with the green moss of the rocks,
OMG Opaleye! I taught, I have to try it out.

anyone who wants to share more information?
I will appreciate,
is all year round good for opaleye?
is it good now or until summer?

I'm planing to go next Saturday at about 2:00 pm if weather is good.

I caught some this past summer including one of the "big" ones and man are they smart (and fun). I repeat, they are smart. Use as light a line that you can get away with. Everything in this past thread is true. I actually only caught small ones with frozen peas. The big guy came on the meat (and a little bit of shell) from a shore crab we caught.

I remember in Ventura Pier a man who was using the complete open mussels as bait, he was placing small trebel hooks on each side of the shell and lowering in to the water not far away from the breakers,
I taught he was a weirdo,

I read some of the past posts in this thread.
It was nice to see the Dompfapops’s post. He has the subject covered pretty well and expertly of course.

My input would be as follows;
A) Opaleye likes rocky area.
B) Chumming frozen peas is essential
C) Moss is great bait, yet it is not easy to keep it on the hook.
D) I have caught them with mussels, ghost shrimp and peas. Not with moss yet, but I have seen it done by others.
E) The “open mussels” rig works, it’s just I have not used it since when I was fishing at the Santa Monica pier in 1970-71.
F) The bobber rig is best—that is what I use most, but I have caught them with high-low, when I was fishing for sheephead.
G) Their mouth is small, but it is very tough. I have broken a hook in one.
H) Go with small hook as recommended.
I) Light line or/and fluorocarbon is very important.

I hope the above helps.

yes big help, thanks
I think will try the open mussels if I don't get anything form the frozen green peas.

The multiple hook open mussel trick used to be the secret for big piling perch.

Here's my experience with opaleyes:

My biggest ones came off of the beach in La Jolla, Marine St. to be exact off of ghost shrimp using a hi-lo rig and size 8 hooks. My buddy and I caught almost 10 and they were averaging about 2-3lbs, BEASTS for me!

Mission Jetty and the other jetty directly across from it is another sure bet for them as well. Never got any on peas, just on shrimp and ghost shrimp. Hi-lo rig or bobber fishing have worked the best for me. I release them all as I have never really liked the taste of them. Fighting-wise, they're awesome little scrappers when matched up to the correct tackle.

Hope this helps.
