Got a chance to fish a couple of Marin County piers Friday afternoon/evening with Brian, Robert and Big Rich. Largest fish caught was this 49" leopard shark by Brian while Robert managed to catch two shovelnose guitarfish on lures.

Thanks for posting the picture Ken. It was great fishing with you.

I thought that I was a goner when she ran towards that channel marker.... Got real lucky and was able to turn her.

Bait= a whole frozen Sardine cut in half.
Rig= 2 hook "striper" rig, half of the Dine on each hook.
Gear= 12' Rod paired W/Okuma Avenger Bait Runner, loaded with 20# test.

Notes:
She bit very lightly. I saw the bite, but it really looked like crab pulls. Took 5-10 minutes for her to pick up the bait & take off with it.
Her stomach was empty.
She had eggs, but WAS NOT gravid.
She was kept due to some facial damage during the fight that would have pretty much ensured that she would not have survived.
She weighed in at 24#'s.

Thanks guys.

And yes Rob got 2 big Shovels on a swim bait...

I am not that familiar with shovelnose as they are still a pretty uncommon catch in the SF Bay, but still have never heard of them hitting lures. Leave it to Rob Smile......

From DFG website: Fishing Information: Shovelnose guitarfish are caught in the surf, in bays and from piers. They take live or dead bait including clams, mussels, sand crabs and almost any other bait or lure. The flesh, especially the tail and back straps, is considered quite good.
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/mspcont5.asp Good job on the shark Brian. We had to catch some fish with Ken in town. It seems like more shovelnose are coming into their northern most boundary, San Francisco. The guitarfish were both at 4 feet or so.

depends what you define as humane. You slit their gills and hang them upside down or leave em in the sink.
