So I bought this reel yesterday and was wondering if anyone else had it and if they think a 50lb mono line would be good for it?

You are not going to get much line if you put 30lb mono on any okuma 50 reel. I would go between 15-20lbs max! Braid would be a different story...

I think you are referring to braid and not monofilament with that particular reel: ABF50 Reel Line Capacity: 440/10 (0.30), 390/12 (0.32), 280/15 (0.37)

On the other hand, the ABF90 can hold 330 yards of 30# monofilament which is enough to take down most anything.

You could do 50# braid no problem....

I was thinking about using braid but I like mono more but I will use a lighter pound and see how I like the feel im just worried if some big takes on the pier and breaks before the crab bet can be brought out

I feel like the strength difference between 25lb and 30lb mono is barely noticeable. I would go with 25lb for more castability and more line on the reel.

Yeah I wouldn't have much line if I used the 30lb so I will def try the 25lb hopefully I can take it out this weekend to Goleta and try it out=)

I was eyeballing that exact reel and wondering about it since it has the baitrunner feature, but also looks like it would be a good casting design. I would put 50 lb. braid on it with a very short topshot of fluoro or straight braid with a mono leader if I was fishing say, a carolina rig. The spool says 390 yds of 12 lb. test which is about the same diameter as 50 lb. mono, but looking at that spool I'd say you'd be able to get 350 yds of 50 lb. braid tops...thats just my eyeball estimate. I don't think you'd get enough 30 lb. mono on it...maybe 150 yds tops...I'd opt for braid...plus it will cast way better and you'll feel the bites better...or fish maybe 17 to 20 lb. mono tops on it like the other guy said. Let us know what you think of the reel...saw it the other day and it caught my eye....a lot cheaper than a baitrunner and the regular avengers seem like good reels. It might be a sleeper.

Yea that reel can handle braid pretty well. I have the abf 40 and used 65lb braid with mono topshot. When you set the hook just don't rear back on it like mono, a good sharp hookset will do the job. Good luck at Goleta, inshore is hot.

When putting the braid on do you prefer to start the reel with mono or use electrical tape to keep it from slipping

Either one works, I use mono but electrical tape could save you the hassle of tying joining knots and having to spool over those knots.
