I've heard from an angler that an oversized Sturgeon was hooked and lost under the pier two days ago. I still get grass shrimp on my cast net.

For the pier and the vicinity of Emeryville, traditionally, Nov-Dec and April-May have been the months when some sturgeon are around. Most people are live baitfishing for striper/halibut but a couple sturgeon are taken on occasion each year by the attentive angler using primarily surf-leaders with anchovy, pileworms, herring. The main thing is keeping your bait away from the ever-abundant dungeness crabs this year long enough to get bit.

I just spoke with a regular named "Mark the Shark" and he said one of his relatives landed a keeper Sturgeon recently at the Berkeley Pier.

The bait fish are out in full force today. Anchovies, smelt, and shiners are everywhere. I've never seen so many people using cast nets than this afternoon. I lost two bites. I even saw a small Striper chase after my bait as I was reeling in the line. Tonight should be a good night with the new moon and incoming tide.
