Well that guy was a bloody mess, and massive, but
I can't get over the 70's clothes those guys are wearing, takes me back. LOL

I bet they drove back home listening to classic rock on the 8 TRACK tape player in their 79 chevy el camino.

The one in the red jacket who I think landed the fish is the legendary Mola Joe.

He now catches fish in Oregon, last I heard.

That pier is the Hermosa pier if I am not mistaken. I wish I had a chance to meet and learn from him.

Funny thing is I also see three 2012 hipsters dressed up complete with aviator sunglasses and tight pants. Picture taken with iPhone and Instagram before they drove off in their Prius blasting classic 70's rock. Oh fashion, how you spin right round.

Well I'm 5'4... Some of the wing spans are bigger than me.

But more then not I catch shorter one..Big girls out of the wash near seal. I cant tell you how much the weight...alittle hard to do in the surf...just as hard as its to release them.

I stoped fishing for big Batties...one big girl destoryed guides.

My son landed one in Berkeley that was 6' from wingtip to wingtip. I would not have believed it had I not measured it myself. It took him 1.5 hours to bring it in on 40# test. The bite was on that night as I hooked, landed & released 4 while he was still fighting that 1 Smile

You can eat the wings if you tenderize them I hear - never done it myself.
I usually just release them. Leopards make much better ceviche!

Yes, we ate one once just to try it. Flesh is a weird stringy, ALMOST but not quite gelatinous (so let's call it delicate) texture. We fileted the wings, dredged them in bread crumbs and pan fried them (my default cooking method when we are trying something new).

It was actually quite good (no, neither tasted like nor had texture of scallops).

However, we wouldn't do it again--very small yield--no sense killing a creature for waaaaay less than 25% yield.

Truth - most of a bay rays weight is in its center body structure, not the wings. The wings are the only part one can really remove for cooking, unless someone has a good recipe for bat ray hearts/livers?
