Would it be weird for me to use an 11' surf rod? 15-30lb test 3-6oz, I don't have any heavier duty rods. This will be my first time fishing for these. I can go grab a cheap heavier rod at walmart or something.

I am using an 11' surf rod 20-40 heavy. What you have is good; cast far, tight lines. Just, when you get a bat in close, and it is right under you, don't high-stick the rod. Meaning, don't load the rod up funny at its most vulnerable point, thus snapping off part of the rod (usually in the upper foot although sometimes right below where a two-piece comes together). Try to go easy on that last part and lean over the rail some if need be, and go easy (as you can). Any rod/reel rated for 20# test mono or above is a contender. Also, I add some rubbing line (spliced with an albright knot) at the end of the line (about 20 yards) of heavier line (braid or mono) for rubbing strength when fish are right below and tend to rub on the pilings when they go underneath the pier. Good luck fishin'....
