I'll make it a little more specific. First, favorite in terms of productivity? Second, favorite in terms of overall experience?

I am from SF so obviously mine are a little bias but here they are.

1) Pacifica Pier. I absolutely love dungeness crab and as far as I know this is the only pier to catch them. I usually get at least one keeper everytime I go (at least early in the season). I have had very little success actually fishing for fish there but that besides the point

2) My favorite in terms of overall experience is by far pier 7 in downtown SF. This pier is an incredible melting pot of different people. Asian immigrants, business people taking a stroll during lunch, joggers, bike riders, homeless vagabonds, and everything in between. It is truly a microcosm of San Francisco and I have really enjoyed everytime I have ever fished there. As far is the fishing I have personally caught Sharks, Rays, Perch, Sanddabs, Smelt, Anchovies. I have seen Halibut and stripers caught there as well.

Lets hear your favorites

I will be at mine in about three weeks. Cabrillo Mole in Santa Catalina island.

Second would be (now out of commision for a while), Paradise Cove. Between Zuma Beach and Malibu.

From what little I have experienced in 2.5 years... You can't beat Goleta Pier. Uncrowded, lots of fish habitat, beautiful views, boat launch, restaurant, clean bathrooms. There used to even be an angler center, but of course we all know that is just a happy memory now.

If there were a tackle shop any closer than Hi Times Liquor, it would be angler heaven.

The Pompano Beach Pier(yes Florida) in late summer/fall run. Yes I love the spots here in Cali, but I lived in Washington DC for 4 years and we would go down there every year for the start of the fall pompano run. A lot of action and fresh Pomps are almost unbeatable.

Fried Pompano, hushpuppies, some greens, some brews, and a big ole bottle of Crystal hot sauce. Yea--boyeee

Pacifica Pier in late June for both productivity and overall experience. Usually good, warm weather before the foggy days of summer and in a good year with warmer water temps the opportunity to catch Dungeness crab, perch, smelt, mackerel, kingfish, striper, salmon, thresher shark, flounder, halibut and bait species such as anchovy, sardine, shiner, and bullhead. Quite an assortment of different fish.

Productivity: Balboa Pier (you can catch so many different species there and in abundance, but watch out for the poachers!).
Experience: Oceanside Pier (it's just so beautiful there and even when the bonito run the folks are friendly).
Vacation: Avila Pier (even though the pier is no where near what it was pre-oil spill, you can spend a great 4th of July weekend in the area hotels and at Pismo Beach).
Nostalgic: Ft. Baker Pier (lots of great memories of fishing with dad, mom, and kids especially during El Nino years).

Well I really enjoy Ft. Baker, but I think my fav has to be Capitola, good chances to get sought after species.

My favorite pier isn't a pier anymore. It was the old Horizons dock in Sausalito. My adventures there as a kid and teen could fill a book on their own.

I also really like the pier at Paradise Park in Tiburon. Costly gate fee, but an awesome pier and many species can be caught there.

Horizons would be mine too. Walking rays off, down the four steps -I think?- and onto the walkway, tour buses stoping in the center, and lots of pictures being taken.
Early 80s. You?
Oh, I bet someone here has a question for ya.

I was definitely there in the early 80s, up to about 86 or 87. I walked many a ray down those steps. Were you the guy who always took my spot at the corner of the rail??!!?

I battled a huge ray there one morning for about 2 hours. The story of it is in Ken's first book.

Sometimes at a good tide I would sneak down under Scomas and get into the rockfish.

I am a big fan of dumbarton pier. I've caught my fair share of leopards. I also brought in a 60-70 pound skate. I've seen people bring in sturgeon and halibut. Only con is when theres a bunch of people out there it becomes tangle central. I think April 1st they shut the road down going to the pier because of some bird that likes to play in the road. So it's about a 3 mile bike ride or walk
