Went out with a buddy today to try our luck crabbing and take advantage of the decent weather between rain conditions. Arrived at the pier around 7AM and stayed till 1PM. Water was pretty calm with no wind until around 10AM which steadily got stronger around 12PM afterwhich made casting a bit of a challenge.

Status: Crowds weren't too bad. Did see quite a few legal male dungies and reds go up and kept and all other actions (about 90%) were undersize females and males. I myself was busy feeding undersized males and females all morning. Lots of undersize action. Saw 3 commercial boats dropping pots right in front of the pier with the closest possibly about ~2 miles away. No keepers but a local buddy did give me one of his to bring home. Thanks Braddah Ray! Here are a few pics:

What is "Inboard Casting"?

I asked the ranger that when he was there and he said "any cast that you make where your rod is on the pier" so I would guess you could technically overhead cast on the side of the pier cause it's not on the pier...

im pretty sure thats when you have your rod not over head, but down by your side and with an open stance.

There actually are some pretty big reds out there, but they're not caught as often as the dungeness...

Good report, planning on hitting up the pier this weekend weather permitting. Inboard casting, from all the years fishing there is underhand casting and casting from the side not letting the rod go past your back or shoulder or in the pier like pinoyfisherman said.

The crowd that day is actually low compared to other days. Also, overhead casting there is the exception not the rule, unfortunately. Whenever I cast underhand there, I get funny looks from the other fishermen. Ya never know, the time you overhead cast is the time you get caught.

Is there a way to maximize one's chances to catch reds?

Honestly in my own experience I catch most of them near that underwater pipe, but that's a snag, you'd have better luck going off of ft.point in San Francisco.
