Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what that thing to the left of the tide station is-- Might have once been a pier of some kind, although I seriously doubt that they would have built a pier that close to the tide station. Perhaps it had something to do with protecting the tide station during the war?

The point, though, is that the tide station is not and never was a Coast Guard station, and most likely the pier was never a Coast Guard pier, either.

Lucy ,

Are you sure that Tide Measuring Station is not near Point Bonita on the north side of the gate ? As a kid in the 60's fishing Fort Point , I can guarantee you the Coast Guard was stationed at that pier just east of FP . Saw them depart from there many times for rescues and even a couple of times when someone jumped from the GG Bridge .

The Coast Guard Pier was long and narrow out to the end or teed where the CG boats were moored , deep water , nothing like the picture of the Tide Station with sand showing at low tide or maybe that is high tide .

I don't see any slide show on that site.

Watch the video here:

And look at the picture here, from NOAA's web site:

Here is the slide show and pic #57. Also check the caption in the original link posted for this website.

And to make things even more confusing...
In this link, they call it the "weather station":

That picture 57 there does NOT show that little building right on the water; it shows some of the buildings inland from there, at Crissy Field. Those buildings (or one of them, anyway) may indeed have been a Coast Guard station-- but it's not the same thing as the little building that sits on its own little pier and houses the tide gauge. At the extreme right-hand side of the picture, you can just barely see a bit of the walkway that leads out to the little tide gauge building, which is not visible in this photo.

Tell you what-- next time I'm out there, I'll go bang on the door of that office building and ask them if they've got some info about the whole thing.

Went out with my friend to Crissy Fields Fort Point Pier today to do some smelt and striper fishing. Got there by around 6ish and ended up leaving around 2ish. At the beginning fishing was a bit slow but as the morning progressed smelt started coming in at the side closer to the bay or the deeper side. The usual people that go were hooking up on smelt but my friend and I were hooking up a minimal amount of smelt(around 5 or 6). When the afternoon came by the wind picked up and the waves picked up as well so all the bobbers were moving all over the place making it difficult to maintain a certain spot. No stripers today or maybe someone caught one after we left but last week one person caught a 24inch striper using live smelt which is the preferred bait to use when you're there. That's all they've been catching, stripers and smelt. Haven't really seen anything else. Oh on a side note I also caught a small walleye perch which was cool and he was released back. Only have a picture of the walleye and will post it later. So overall fishing there is decent as of now. Anyone know how Fort Baker's been doing? Might want to try it out. Thanks!
