Eugene,

Great job of finding sponsors. It will be good to meet the PFIC members. I hope we will have a good turn out.

Maybe fish will cooperate too.

Is there a place to purchase bait while we are there? Or should we bring our own. I know that the bait is being supplier, its the "while supplies last" I am worried about! I make bait at the piers, as well as purchase squid, anchovy and shrimp. Come to think of it, the shrimp have not caught me anything. Maybe I will leave that off my bait list and pick up some mussels from now on.

Our bait sponsor Paul's Bait and Tackle is on the way to the pier.

801 S. Pacific Ave, San Pedro 310-833-3279

Tell them you are coming to our derby and you want to get more bait just in case. They may give you a discount.

Here are the rules that I think would work for our Derby;

The Derby is from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday October 24th at the Cabrillo Pier, San Pedro.

Each paid participant will receive a score card, a raffle ticket and access to the bait provided.

The fishing area is limited to the pier only. No Jetty.

Two rods are allowed with (2) hooks max. on each rod.

Any bait or lure is allowed. Participants are welcomed to use the bait provided by sponsors. We will try to divide them equally among participants as much as possible.

Upon catching a fish the judge will be summand to punch the participant’s card. The card will be punched by the judge according to the chart below.

If the fish is of a legal size and the angler wants to keep it, it will be tagged by a colored zip tie and placed in the wire basket provided by the host.

All DF&G regulations will be followed.

The following list is more than what we can expect at that pier, but just in case;

Bass (short) 5
Bass 12”+ 10

Any perch 1
Any Smelt 1

No points for Bat Rays? Under 48" and then over 48". I think that is unpatriotic. Especially since it is the biggest fish that will be caught. Man,and I was just now thinking of going to it and dragging Kurt along with me to keep Jed company. I think only one hook per rod allowed will make it interesting as well.

Bigger baits get the bigger Rays. I get laughed at until they see what I hook-up with.

Default settings unless otherwise noted.
Place = Newport Bay dock

Reel = Penn 114h 6/0 Full-Aluminum Frame

This list was originally made based on my observation of the catch in Catalina during our get-together.

In the past five years that I have been there as well as the times I was there on my own. I did not see any bat ray caught. One exception was the report that scooter did about a local who caught a big one.

Bat rays 10
Bat rays 36”+ 20
