I caught these 2 fish in the mid 90's at Pacifica pier in July just as it got dark. All the salmon fisherman went home, giving me a spot at the end on the L. Used a high low rig with whole anchovies tied with magic thread. One was 23 inches and the other was 21. Are they Pacific Hake? Sablefish? or something else? Whatever they are they seem rare in shallow water. I gutted them but didn't have the courage to eat them. No one on the pier had a clue as to what they were. This has been bugging me for a lot of years so this is the best place to get an answer. hope the pic of a pic shows up ok online? thanks in advance

North Pacific Hake (Merluccius productus). Fairly large specimen, especially from the shore. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your replies, I don't go to Pacifica pier anymore. Rather have some space and fish on the rocks or beach. Should have eaten those fish though

Yes, Pacific hake (see article and pictures) and bigger than most pier-caught hake.
