Since we are are in a questioning state. I know some of last yearís spawn are 10 months old and still in the areas they hatched. But, where are this yearís egg-layers? Any inside the gate yet? When they arrive, sturgeon should be in the bay (and not just the rivers/marshes/sloughs). Thanks for any useful information!
I guess it is time for me to check the herring hotline...

The fish must be staging up now in the deep water channels letting their gonads mature. Letís see what happens in two weeks. https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Commercial/Herring

Forgive the semi-hijack ... Can you catch them on a sabiki when they're spawning, or are they not biting and you always use a cast net?

you can catch them on the sabiki, but most people use the cast nets

Yeah, sabikis are especially handy when the tides are moving out and the herring move out when you are on the shore. You can still cast out to them and jig all the way back in, hitting the bottom and pulling up, and still get them.

Thanks Red! Do you know where they hit last Saturday ?

It was gale force wind last Saturday and I didn't even try, so I missed them. Any idea when is the next run?

Not sure, Sausalito I believe but with the rain that is supposed to happen in a couple days, there should be a full-blown spawn. Loch Lomond Bait/San Rafael many times knows as they get information from the herring boat fishermen.

Below, at Fort Baker, is a good place to try (photo by Mahigeer)

The blog seems to indicate there was a run in Alameda recently as well as Point Richmond.

Some bird watchers also confirmed large congregations of birds in Alemeda on the 15th of December.

I'm really interested in catching some herring this year but don't know if I want to buy a casting net for the narrow window they're around and then have it sit in the garage the rest of the year. Sabikis seem the way to go if I'm not trying to fill a closet full of jars of pickled herring.

There was a spawn albeit a small one in a couple places according to a reliable source. they are waiting for rain.
Be ready. Nets and buckets in car.
They are coming.
