Not really. There are tons of small anchovies with a few macs patrolling those schools.

Schools have been coming in and out the past few days at Pier 2. I've caught more jack mackerel than pacifics but I'm getting decent numbers of both. Jacksmelt are also in the mix.

I received this report back from Doug Shigematsu (for whom I had asked the original question).

“David and I were able to get to the Monterey wharf Saturday afternoon (9/30) and Sunday morning. Saturday we hit the incoming tide about 2:30 pm and we we're inundated with jelly fish! I've never seen so many at one time! Thousands!!! All up and down the entire wharf! By about 6 pm they finally started to clear and we started catching a few fish. One jack mackerel, one Pacific mackerel, and several small bocaccio. Sunday (10/1) was pretty slow too. There were several people catching mackerel and small striped bass around the middle of the wharf. We went down towards the end and caught 4 nice Pacific mackerel on one cast! Then nothing! David caught about 20 anchovy then by 9pm no one was catching anything.”

Over the past couple of months, my son and I have been to the wharf several times only to find the jelly fish thick in the water -- thousands of them. No way any fish could survive the masses. Today (saturday), we arrived at 9:30 am to see 1/3 filled buckets of mackerel, and we found that they were there about an hour earlier. We did see in the water large schools of anchovies which did not want to bite our sabikis. If we had a net, we could have taken many. We will try again sunday a bit earlier.

I can attest to the jellyfish infestation we had on 9/30. We had a big swath of warm water move into the bay, so I went kayaking. But I had to constantly clean the tentacles off my line & my bait. Tons of pacific macs were harrassing my bait too. Fortunately, I stuck if out and caught this thing!

Sorry about the huge photo size haha...first time using imgur, since photobucket doesn't allow sharing photos anymore.
