Hey guys, went fishing at Balboa Pier this past weekend and the Mack are here! Everyone was catching half a bucket full. Nice size mackerel this year. Didn't see any Bonito though.

I did notice a man fishing on the pier near the surf. Strange setup, I haven't really seen before. He had a 10 foot long sabiki rig but using a strip of a plastic bag at the start and end of the rig. About 6 huge treble hooks on it. Didn't see any bait. He did catch these 2 fish but I have never seen these before. What are they and are they only around Newport?

Hard to say without seeing some pictures. Those snaggers target any fish that come into range. Could have been spotfin croakers, white seabass (small seatrout variety), other croakers, or even mullet. We've been fighting the issue of snagging with the DF&W for years (with no results).

The picture is of a large spotfin croaker snagged at Balboa.

Having grew up in So Cal and moved away about 20 years ago I've never heard of mullet being abundant down there. Anyone know the history behind this? Have they always been around? Same with spotfin croakers. Are they making their way up the coast?

Stripped mullet have always been here in the bays and estuarine environments. They are filter feeders so they rarely take a hook to the mouth. During the summer they can be found cruising the surf zone. I've only ever caught two on spoons while fishing for other species.

Spotfin croaker have always been here too but they favor areas with large clam beds.

There have been a lot of mullet in the Monterey/Carmel area this summer. Its the first time I've seen one up here. Now they're all over the place!
