|Memories — my first party boat trip out of San Diego was on the "Marine" boat "Alibi Run" in July 1963. The boat was reserved for Marines and their families from MCRD and was, I believe, a former PT boat.
I was just me, the crew, and about a dozen Marines who didn't bring much tackle but did bring many cases of beer. They began drinking heavy before we even left the bait receiver and by the end of the day several were seriously drunk (my biggest memory was the smell in the bunk area of the boat).
We left at midnight, started fishing about 8:30, and arrived back at 5:30 in the evening. Most of the we were fishing about 75 miles out from San Diego.
We were seeking out albacore but couldn't find them and we wound up fishing for bonito. I landed seven good-sized bonito (the largest being 8 1/2 pounds). My mom's roses were happy.
