Basically when the "big 3" (at least for me Wink ) are closed: salmon, lings and halibut.

What would you ocean fish for at that time?

Unless you guys feel like posting a "Are you kidding me, Lou? Those months are perfect for surf fishing for ---. Save those other fish for the other months" response, then by all means. Very Happy

Jan-March for me is big surfperch and occasionally a striper.

My typical routine during this time is to drop crab traps and return the the beach/shore to surf cast for perch/stripers.

Or just grab a book/read or nap in between soaking times.

There is also the possibility for digging clams.

It's sturgeon time. Hit up one of piers or shorelines in the Delta, soak some eel or roe and bag yerself a Dino.

For me the winter months represent a chance for some good surfperch fishing in both SoCal and CenCal, jacksmelt in SoCal, and some of the best chances for sturgeon in the Bay Area (even though you're lucky when you get one).

Added bonus: sanddabs around the entrance to San Francisco Bay and herring in San Francisco Bay and Crescent City.

Extra Added Bonus: less crowding and more parking spaces when fishing the SoCal piers.

Thanks for the suggestions, Ken!

I believe lingcod and halibut is open year round for shore based anglers. Only closed to boat based anglers until mid April

From shore I normally spend this time of the year on the crab, perch, rockcod, and eels in the Ocean. I have been spending my time in the south bay on the sturgeon but they havent been cooperating this season. I will on occasion kill some time with the jacksmelt just for sport when Im desperate for some quick action.
